History.
Originally known as Lebanon Township, Apple Valley was established in 1858 and remained a farming community for nearly a century.
From the 1950s to the 1980s, residential developments gradually replaced farmland.
Early development in the city was overseen by Orrin Thompson, a real estate developer. He hired a company to determine where growth would take place in the Twin Cities. Located at the corner of Cedar Avenue and County Road 42, it was a one-half mile away. The Brobacks, who built the city’s first four houses, sold Thompson the first houses and streets.
Thompson named the development Apple Valley because the company that selected the site was based in Apple Valley, California. However, there is another explanation for the name change. Local developer Henry Broback explained the renaming of Lebanon Township as Apple Valley because it reminded them of Apple Valley, California, which was a friendly community.
